That's a strange one - just a thought, could your friends netbook have 
802.11n and is switched somehow permanently into that mode. I'm 
presuming your WRT54GL is only 802.11B/G. i.e. the Netbook is only 
looking for 802.11n routers (which your neighbours may have).
