If I remember > correctly versions 2 & 3 used to come in two forms, one ran on top of > DOS, the other on top of OS/2. it would make you sick if you had Novell stock and knew that in the 90s, Ray Norda tried to get Linux into Novell and under both the Netware server stack and under the clients. Not to mention that, when kicked out, he created Caldera and Caldera Linux with deep ties to Netware. But they learned how to make more money using legal threats when they purchased DR DOS from Novel and then sued Microsoft and won a bunch of millions in a settlement. They eventually purchased SCO, did some Linux work there but again thought they could make more money threatening Linux customers and IBM with legal action regarding ownership of UNIX and its ties to Linux. And your favorite company, Microsoft, was behind getting them millions of dollars to keep them afloat and in court. I set up a few systems running Netware for OS/2 and it was pretty cool. Not sure how much OS-like features they ended up having later since DOS didn't really give them much.
