[probably has a proper name that I don't know]
followed by...
- A 'one-quarter' sign
- And, then the 'blank' character.
This is why I jumped to the conclusion that it might be UniCode.
Does no one else see those extra characters?

Yes I see those characters. Also when I hover the mouse pointer over it I get a different URL.
I'm using Mozilla Suite 1.7.11 for windoze at the moment.
