There can be makes of DVD blanks (-R or +R) that simply don't work with a particular burner. One thing to check anyway is whether the DVD-Rs that you have a double density (or what the correct term is) - 8.5 GB capacity instead of 4.7GB - these are NOT backwards compatible to standard DVD burners.
