Orest, > use MAC filtering on the router I'm just at this point with my setup. I've enabled the 128-bit encryption
but  was wanting to filter by MAC addresses. Being that I have only one
wireless  machine, it shouldn't be too difficult but I don't know yet how
to begin. I  see within the configuration options for my 2Wire 1000SW WAP
that I can change  the designation of the router's address and assign an
address to my laptop via  a range of DHCP addresses but I haven't yet
figured out what specifically I  need to do.

No, I don't think that is the option you want.

I use an SMC router. There you go to the "Firewall" page (ensure that firewall is ENabled), and then to the "MAC Filter" sub-page. Here is the description there:

MAC Filtering Table

This section helps provides MAC Filter configuration. When enabled, only MAC addresses configured will have access to your network. All other client devices will get denied access. This security feature can support up to 32 devices and applies to clients.

   * MAC Address Control :        Yes   No

   * MAC Filtering Table (up to 32 computers)

and from the help for that page:

Advanced Setup | Firewall | MAC Filter
This section helps provides MAC Filter configuration. When enabled, only MAC addresses configured will have access to your network. All other client devices will get denied access. This security feature can support up to 32 devices and applies to clients.

So you need to fill in the MAC address for the wireless computer that you wish to allow access. A MAC ID number is 6 bytes, usually separated by colons, for eg.  00:06:34:D3:FC:1B. Often you will find a drop-down list of currently connected computers, makes it easy to fill in the MAC ID.

Once you turn your firewall support ON, and enable MAC filtering with your wireless adapter's (PCCard unit) MAC ID included, you should have accomplished what you set out to do.

To test it, just purposely fill in the MAC ID incorrectly, and see what happens.
