Lewis, I opted for the SBC Yahoo DSL package for $29.95/month and already think itI think if I hear that same line from another manufacturer one more time, I'll just laugh out loud over the phone...! :-)
is a good deal. I've communicated with a more senior tech this morning and
confirmed the inability to filter on MAC addresses but they are planning
to update their firmware in the near future to even include WAP security,
but I suppose we all know what that may mean. <G>
Anyway, the firmware is flashable over the DSL connection, so we'll see.It seems to be the case more and more these days. I don't know whether it's the inability of the folks doing the (non)technical writing for the sales stuff, the web staff who can't seem to get it together, or outright lack of detail by the design staff, which is further exploited by the sales team to sell the stuff quickly (before anyone notices), but it's very, very frustrating. I ended up eating a couple routers that way a few moinths ago (almost ate...one is actually installed at a client site and the other is listed at Half.com for - guess what - about half of what I paid!). :'(
You know, I think it's one of those situations where try as you might to investigate hardware beforehand, you always seem to learn much more after
you own it.
BTW, I went to the Long Island blog site and signed up, saw a few posts andYou can blog without it, too, remember.
am anxious to get the Mozilla Blog client for my new ThinkPad.
As much asI've found XP - through anectodal evidence; my only exposure to it has been to remove it (8 times) and install it clean (once) - to be a love/hate kind of thing.
I've despised MS in the past, I find myself liking the new XP software.
Once I get a handle on it and get the system configured to my liking, I'mMore fun on the horizon!
going to create a disk image, reformat and load eCS v1.1 and begin
experimenting with it. I have a feeling it'll be a bit more involved (but
I'm used to that by now) but I feel the need to bang my forehead some
more. <G>
Finally, I'm seeing some mention of SMC wireless routers and thought I'd solicit opinions on which people are using and how they like theirNo experience with any of SMC's Wi-Fi stuff, but my overall opinion of their hardware from past experience has been rather sour. They're located right here on Long Island, too, and I've even been to their headquarters (wow, that was a while ago...). I have a buddy who used to resell quite a bit of their stuff, and so I was able to get my hands on scads of networking hardware on the cheap, but as I found that I couldn't really rely on it, I stopped. My web designer has a little SMC broadband router at home and he likes it, though by his own admission, he really hasn;t had any experience with anything else (but it has been reliable for him, as I'd be the guy to hear about it!).
