Actually, Charles, in the US, there are a total of eleven channels available. The problem is the signal overlap, i.e., each channel is 25MHz wide, but the channels are only 5MHz apart, so an AP configured on channel 1 will overlap with an AP configured on channels 2, 3, 4, and 5. Channel 6 is then free, but 7, 8, 9, and 10 will overlap with 6. 11 is the upper limit here.

In most of Europe (excluding France), there are 13 channels total (France only has four: 10 through 13) and Japan has fourteen possibles, although channel 14 is actually 12MHz away from channel 13 (don't ask!), so there's no overlap even between 13 and 14.
