Older iBooks actually had an internal PCMCIA slot with a Wi-Fi card in it.
Rally kind of funny looking when you tore the machine down to that point
(not a very elegant solution at all). Newer ones use mPCI, just like
internal PC-based notebooks. Apple called their cards (I use past tense
because I haven't seen one in some time) AirPort cards.
The process of connecting is similar to the PC. The OS sees the card as an
ethernet adapter. There is a utility to store profiles and encryption
settings, located in Control Panels. Configuration & connection are fairly
intuitive, if you've had any experience with the Mac OS and the IP stack on
it (even though the underlying OS in OS X is miles away from OS 9 and
earlier, the newer being Linux-based).
