Older iBooks actually had an internal PCMCIA slot with a Wi-Fi card in it. Rally kind of funny looking when you tore the machine down to that point (not a very elegant solution at all). Newer ones use mPCI, just like internal PC-based notebooks. Apple called their cards (I use past tense because I haven't seen one in some time) AirPort cards. The process of connecting is similar to the PC. The OS sees the card as an ethernet adapter. There is a utility to store profiles and encryption settings, located in Control Panels.
