This card already existed before the widgets came to life. What did people do in these times?

You should be able to configure the relevant things through MPTS.  On my Wlan card, there are settings for SSID and WEP Key in MPTS - the XWLan widget just makes things easier as you can have multiple profiles for public hotspots, etc.
