Quick follow-up with yet another option for the battery-lorn:
It is possible to rebuild the existing battery pack, keeping the circuitry intact and just replacing the cells.

While I'm not 100% sure that this will avoid the nasty "illegal" battery warnings from the Lenovo battery utility, I believe it should. Jon, you mihgt want to give this a go on your dead unit, just to see if it's worthwhile (I may do so on one of mine).
